ACNM Condemns SCOTUS Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

On June 24, 2022 the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) reviewed the case of Dobbs vs Jackson Women's Health Organization. (Click the link to be directed to the full decision). The case, which challenged that the Mississippi 15 week abortion ban was unconstitutional based on the precedent set by previous historical cases. In making this decision, SCOTUS reviewed both Roe and Casey. Their final decision was as follows:

"The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives."

The decision means that states are now in charge of forming their own laws about abortion.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives has taken a firm stance against this ruling.

ACNM is one of 10 professional maternal, sexual, and reproductive health organizations that stands in solidarity against the ruling.

You can read the full statement here.

The statement shares the consensus from multiple leading health organizations that abortion is an essential part of reproductive health care, and warns of the negative repercussions that can result from restricting access.

The West Virginia Affiliate supports the stance of our national organization.
